You will guide the development of machine learning models and infrastructure to ensure users see the most relevant and engaging content. Define the long-term technical direction and strategy for content retrieval systems, aligning with Reddit's product and business goals.

Translate high-level objectives into a clear team roadmap, making informed decisions about model quality, content expansion, experimentation speed, infrastructure costs, and system reliability.

Mentor and develop your team of machine learning engineers, fostering their professional growth and maximizing their impact.

Oversee the creation and refinement of retrieval systems that identify diverse, fresh, and high-quality content candidates for personalized feeds.

Implement strong practices for measurement, experimentation, and debugging to understand retrieval performance, content coverage, and downstream effects.

Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, ranking, safety, and product teams to build scalable, low-latency retrieval systems for future recommendation capabilities.

Ensure high standards for system performance, uptime, latency, cost-effectiveness, and responsible AI practices.

Partner with stakeholders across the company to identify opportunities, manage expectations, and communicate team progress.

Work with recruiters to attract, interview, and hire talented machine learning engineers, building a world-class team.

Requirements

A minimum of 2 years of experience managing teams focused on machine learning or recommender systems.

Hands-on experience with large-scale production machine learning systems, particularly in areas like recommender systems, retrieval models, embedding systems, sequence models, transformer architectures, or LLM-based recommendations.

A solid understanding of recommender systems, including candidate retrieval, embedding/indexing, ranking handoffs, feed personalization, exploration strategies, content quality assessment, and measurement methodologies.

The ability to develop and articulate a clear technical strategy for complex problems, balancing user relevance, ecosystem health, system scalability, and business outcomes.

A results-oriented approach to developing scalable, well-designed, and responsible AI solutions that deliver business value.

Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to various audiences and build strong relationships with cross-functional partners.

The base salary range for this position is $253,300 - $354,600 USD.

This role is eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units.
