Job description
Senior Full Stack Software Engineer at quartermaster.
About the role
Quartermaster is developing a comprehensive maritime intelligence platform. This role involves building and scaling the primary application that defense analysts, coast guard operators, and commercial fleet managers use to monitor and interact with maritime data. You will manage features from backend geospatial processing to frontend React components, directly influencing how users access global sensor data.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design, build, and deploy full-stack features for the React web portal and Spring backend services.
- Create and maintain RESTful APIs that provide sensor data, vessel telemetry, and AI detection results to users.
- Architect and improve the AWS microservices layer to ensure reliability, scalability, and low latency under high data loads.
- Optimize PostGIS queries and data access for bulk artifact retrieval, map rendering, and time-series analysis across many vessels.
- Develop internal administration and fleet management tools for configuring, monitoring, and supporting deployed SmartMast units.
- Work with the design team to implement precise UI components for data-rich map views and sensor visualizations.
- Participate in on-call rotations and take responsibility for service reliability and incident response.
- Review code, mentor engineers, and elevate the team's technical standards.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional full-stack software engineering experience.
- Strong proficiency in React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript for complex web applications.
- Solid backend skills in Spring Boot, including designing and building scalable REST APIs.
- Practical experience with PostGIS databases, including schema design and writing performant queries.
- Working knowledge of AWS services (S3, Lambda, ECS/EKS, IoT Core, CloudWatch) and infrastructure-as-code tools.
- Experience with microservices architecture, containerization (Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
- Ability to understand complex data flows involving real-time streams, large media assets, and geospatial coordinates.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with geospatial data, mapping libraries (Mapbox, Leaflet, Deck.gl), or AIS/vessel tracking systems.
- Familiarity with WebSockets or SSE for real-time UI updates.
- Background in defense, maritime, or government software with exposure to data security requirements.
- Experience integrating machine learning model outputs into user-facing product features.
