Senior QA Engineer - WiFi
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and execution of end-to-end test strategies that directly validate the performance and reliability of Plume's WiFi and networking platform. You will craft automated test solutions using Python to ensure new features meet strict quality standards before reaching millions of global customers. This role requires you to deeply investigate complex field and system-level defects using advanced troubleshooting tools to isolate root causes. You will collaborate tightly with software, firmware, and QA partners to define testable requirements and drive continuous improvement in testing processes. You will participate actively in feature and design discussions to ensure testability from the earliest stages of development. Your work will ensure that the Plume Platform As a Service delivers a consistent and high-quality experience across diverse hardware and environments. You will champion a bias for action by challenging assumptions and focusing on doing what should be done to protect the customer experience.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design, document, and execute comprehensive test plans covering Wi-Fi connectivity, performance, stability, and functionality across diverse deployment scenarios.
Develop and maintain scalable Python-based test automation frameworks to increase test coverage and significantly reduce regression cycles for networking features.
Perform functional, integration, regression, and system testing across a wide range of Wi-Fi, networking, and embedded platforms to validate feature readiness.
Test and validate critical networking protocols and services including 802.11 standards, Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionality, routing, VLANs, NAT, DNS, and DHCP.
Reproduce, debug, and conduct thorough root cause analysis of complex defects found in the field or large-scale system environments to drive permanent fixes.
Utilize network analysis tools such as Wireshark for deep packet inspection and systematic network troubleshooting of intricate issues.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including software, firmware, and QA to define test strategies, test cases, and deliver products that meet rigorous quality expectations.
Participate actively in feature and design discussions to influence testability, identify risks early, and contribute to the continuous improvement of QA processes and methodologies.
Verify platform behavior under real-world conditions to ensure reliability, security, and performance meet or exceed customer expectations globally.
Document test procedures, results, and insights meticulously to create a knowledge base that supports future testing and onboarding efforts.
Drive the adoption of modern QA practices by integrating tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and Postman into robust CI/CD testing workflows.
Provide actionable feedback on product quality and user experience to guide development decisions and release readiness.
Ensure all testing activities align with the company's mission to deliver exceptional connected experiences at massive scale through the Plume Platform.
Requirements
3 - 5 years of professional experience in QA, SDET, or Software Test Engineering roles with a proven track record of delivering quality outcomes.
Strong foundational understanding of Wi-Fi technologies, specifically the 802.11 standards, and core networking fundamentals such as routing, switching, and IP protocols.
Hands-on experience with embedded systems, router platforms, and hardware test environments where software interacts closely with physical devices.
Expert-level Python scripting abilities to build and maintain automated test frameworks, libraries, and integration tests.
Practical experience using Wireshark and other network troubleshooting tools to analyze traffic, diagnose issues, and validate fixes.
Familiarity with common ISP and enterprise router platforms such as RDK-B, prplOS, and OpenWrt, or other Linux-based networking firmware is a strong advantage.
Working knowledge of TR-369, TR-181, and TR-069/TR-098 protocols and their impact on device management and interoperability.
Experience with CI/CD tools and methodologies, including Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Postman, or similar platforms to automate test execution and reporting.
Exceptional debugging, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills to clearly articulate issues, collaborate with stakeholders, and drive resolutions.
A bias for action and a commitment to doing what should be done exceptionally well, aligning with the company philosophy that if something cannot be done exceptionally, it should not be done.
Strong attention to detail and ownership of complex problems in environments where networking, software, and hardware intersect.
