Senior Configuration Engineer
Job description
About the role
Pivotal Configuration Management Opportunity
Pivotal leads the electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) market. The company designs, develops, and builds light eVTOL aircraft. Pivotal earned recognition for the BlackFly, the world's first light eVTOL to complete manned flights and enter consumer use. The business focuses on efficient, compact, and simple aircraft. These machines serve consumer, public service, and defense sectors. Pivotal's unique tilt-aircraft design operates on a scalable platform with a decade of flight history. The organization recently introduced the Helix, a next-generation aircraft advancing toward general release and scalable production in 2026.
Investment in mobility ranks among the highest priorities in modern technology. Pivotal presents the correct company, space, strategy, and timing. Individuals prepared for adventure are invited to join the team and grow together.
The Configuration Management team seeks a Senior Configuration Engineer. This is an individual contributor role supporting engineering groups in releasing parts, Bills of Materials, and technical documentation. The person in this position guarantees accurate and traceable product configuration data for all offerings. They manage Pivotal's change control process to ensure complete visibility of modification activity. The role enables traceability for product configuration data and ensures smooth information flow between engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain functions. The engineer will use the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform (PLM) and Epicor (ERP) in a structured way. This position is critical for protecting product integrity and helping the company scale efficiently.
Position Location and Terms
The role is based in Palo Alto, California. It is a full-time position classified as exempt. The compensation package lists a base salary of $160,000 for 2025.
What you'll do
- Architect intake forms that precisely capture part specifications and revisions for BlackFly and Helix programs, ensuring configuration needs are translated into structured data requirements.
- Implement and validate control rules inside the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform and Epicor system to manage version movement, approval gates, and access rights across the product lifecycle.
- Examine incoming change requests in detail, assessing effects on configuration baselines, bill integrity, and documentation reliability to prevent downstream integration issues.
- Release configuration sets that align precisely with production timelines, regulatory standards, and customer commitments, maintaining strict version fidelity.
- Work collaboratively with manufacturing teams to verify Bills of Materials and confirm correct item master records, resolving discrepancies before production execution.
- Guide internal and external partners on data methods and configuration workflows, encouraging widespread adoption of PLM standards across the organization.
- Promote end-to-end traceability by connecting requirements, CAD components, change records, and tests within the platform to ensure regulatory and quality objectives are met.
- Maintain audit preparedness through meticulous documentation of procedures and enabling clear, real-time change visibility for stakeholders and regulators.
- Analyze configuration trends and anomalies to drive continuous improvement in data management practices and prevent recurrence of classification or versioning errors.
- Support the integration of new aircraft programs such as Helix by configuring data structures, approval processes, and release criteria in both PLM and ERP environments.
- Act as a technical liaison between design, engineering, and supply chain teams to ensure configuration decisions support operational efficiency and product reliability.
- Monitor system performance and data integrity, identifying opportunities to optimize workflows, automate manual steps, and enhance user adoption of configuration tools.
Requirements
Hands-on history managing change control for complex hardware configurations is mandatory for success in this role.
Understanding of product hierarchy, Bills of Materials, and revision control in regulated settings is required to maintain data accuracy and compliance.
Familiarity with 3DEXPERIENCE Platform concepts, data models, and configuration workflows is required to perform core job functions effectively.
Knowledge of Epicor ERP data structures, order routing logic, and configurable product rules is required to ensure seamless information exchange between systems.
Three to five years of related experience handling configuration, change management, and data control in engineering environments is required for this position.
A demonstrated ability to interpret technical documentation and translate it into structured configuration rules is essential for maintaining consistency across platforms.
Strong attention to detail is required when managing interdependent configuration items to avoid data mismatches that could impact production or certification activities.
The capability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment is necessary to meet project deadlines and regulatory expectations.
Nice to have
- Exposure to eVTOL aircraft, aviation programs, or emerging mobility platforms is favored due to the specialized nature of the products and regulatory landscape.
- Experience with tilt-rotor or similar complex mechanical systems provides contextual advantages in understanding configuration interdependencies.
- Background in regulated industries such as aerospace, defense, or medical devices is preferred because it aligns with Pivotal's compliance and quality standards.
