Sr. Software Engineer

About the role

Pilot is seeking a senior engineer to join the Bookkeeping Automation team to build systems that convert financial data into reliable, audit-ready records. You will manage the full project lifecycle, from initial design to production deployment, while collaborating with product and bookkeeping teams to refine our automation platforms.

What you'll do

• Lead projects from problem definition and technical design through to final implementation and measurement.
• Develop, test, and maintain high-quality code for services and internal tools.
• Design workflows that bridge the gap between automated systems and human operational requirements.
• Create observability and evaluation frameworks to track system quality and resolve performance issues.
• Ensure the security and reliability of platforms processing sensitive financial data.
• Work with product managers and bookkeeping experts to translate complex requirements into functional solutions.
• Provide mentorship to team members and improve engineering standards through code reviews and design documentation.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python within production environments.
• Proven history of shipping and owning business-critical or customer-facing systems.
• Experience designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting reliable production infrastructure.
• Ability to make sound product and systems decisions in ambiguous environments.
• Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring and teaching other engineers.

Nice to have

• Background in fintech, accounting, or financial operations software.
• Experience building integrations with third-party APIs.
• Knowledge of system security, data permissions, or handling sensitive information.
