Picnic is seeking a Backend Engineer to enhance and scale our logistics and operations platforms. This position is crucial for individuals who thrive in complex environments and are eager to influence the technical direction of our backend systems that facilitate real-world operations.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop high-quality, thoroughly tested code using languages such as Java and Go, maintaining a high standard for engineering practices.
- Spearhead significant backend projects in areas including vehicle routing optimization, automation, scalability, and reliability.
- Take ownership of backend architecture and devise solutions for complex, impactful challenges.
- Lead the development and scaling of essential data stores and API layers as the company grows.
- Establish and advocate for best practices in building, testing, monitoring, and maintaining large-scale systems.
- Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to convert technical vision into actionable quarterly roadmaps.
- Mentor fellow engineers through technical leadership, code reviews, and collaborative efforts.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in software engineering.
- Strong background in designing and implementing systems in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
- Proven experience in leading complex initiatives across teams and aligning architectural goals.
- In-depth knowledge of backend system design, APIs, data storage solutions, and distributed systems.
- Experience working closely with frontend, mobile, product, data, and business teams.
- A hands-on approach to engineering with a commitment to code quality, reliability, and operational excellence.
- A strong desire to impact product development and create systems that benefit customers and operators.
Nice to have
- Experience in building or managing logistics, delivery, or real-time systems at scale.
- Background in rapidly growing technology companies with high execution standards.
- Understanding of frontend and mobile trade-offs and their implications on backend performance.

Practical notes
This position requires in-office attendance five days a week to foster collaboration and innovation. The annual salary for this role ranges from $145,000 to $183,250, with actual compensation determined based on individual qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include equity awards and performance-based bonuses.
