Engineering Manager, Backend

About the role

PhonePe operates a massive digital payments ecosystem serving over 600 million registered users and 40 million merchants. We are seeking an engineering leader to guide backend teams in building and scaling high-impact financial and consumer technology platforms.

What you'll do

• Lead technical discussions and oversee decision-making processes for your team.
• Create and carry out engineering roadmaps for your specific areas of ownership.
• Establish and enforce high-quality engineering standards and best practices.
• Maintain production system health and operational process hygiene.
• Manage the performance and business outcomes of your team.
• Collaborate with product and business stakeholders to refine requirements and ensure accountability for delivery.
• Recruit, coach, and retain top-tier engineering talent.
• Manage relationships with internal stakeholders, operations, and external vendors.

Requirements

• BTech, MTech, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Minimum 8 years of software development experience.
• At least 3 years of experience in a team leadership capacity.
• Demonstrated ability to design and build complex, large-scale distributed systems.
• Proven history of managing high-performing development groups.
• Experience driving architecture and design for multiple subsystems alongside senior engineers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.

• Previous work experience in startup environments or fast-paced organizations.
