About the role

Join the Model Behavior team to influence how Perplexity's AI products interact with users. This role involves defining the style of AI responses and guiding how AI utilizes various tools, learned abilities, and stored information. You will develop strategies for prompts and context to ensure excellent user experiences across different product areas and AI models.

What you'll do

• Develop, test, and refine the prompts, capabilities, tools, and memory systems that define how Perplexity's AI responds across all products and features.
• Create automated feedback loops to continuously improve prompt design, tool usage, and the AI's ability to recall information.
• Participate in the testing and deployment of new AI models.
• Conduct research to pinpoint inconsistencies and errors in AI outputs for both internal development and live production systems.
• Educate other engineering teams on effective prompt design and context engineering methods.
• Monitor new developments in prompting, context engineering, and AI alignment from both academic and industry sources, and apply relevant insights to the team's work.

Requirements

• 2 to 10 or more years of experience in software engineering or research.
• Solid understanding of core software engineering principles and the technical aspects of large language model (LLM) and agent-based systems.
• Practical experience influencing LLM behavior through prompt creation, tool and skill development, or memory system design.
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills, especially when explaining intricate ideas to various audiences.

• Recent professional experience with current LLM-powered products.
• Experience collaborating with multiple teams or external collaborators.
• Background in creating evaluation metrics or benchmarks for AI systems.
