Engineering Director, Infrastructure

About the role

Payjoy is seeking a leader to oversee our cloud infrastructure, developer platforms, and engineering services. You will guide the strategy for our technical foundation to ensure our systems remain reliable and efficient as we continue to serve our global customer base.

What you'll do

• Set the long-term architectural direction for our CI/CD pipelines, developer tools, and cloud infrastructure.
• Manage the delivery of major infrastructure projects while maintaining a balance between cost, security, and system performance.
• Create and enforce technical standards, service ownership models, and operational rhythms to improve engineering output.
• Collaborate with executive leadership, security, and product teams to align infrastructure investments with company goals.
• Build and maintain a high-performing team culture focused on accountability, technical excellence, and collaboration.

Requirements

• Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum of 12 years of experience in software, infrastructure, or platform engineering.
• At least 4 years of experience in an engineering management role.
• Demonstrated success in building and scaling distributed systems and cloud-native platforms.
• Practical experience with AWS and modern cloud architecture.
• Deep knowledge of DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, and automation.
• Proven ability to manage technical debt while delivering business value.
• Experience leading large-scale technical initiatives across multiple teams.
• Background in incident management, including post-incident analysis and reliability improvements.
• Ability to mentor and recruit senior engineers and engineering managers.
• Strong communication skills for influencing stakeholders and explaining technical tradeoffs.
