About the role
Oyster is on the lookout for a Senior Counsel specializing in Employment Products to enhance our Employment Law Team. This position focuses on providing expert legal guidance on employment matters across the globe, supporting both internal teams and external clients. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of distributed work while contributing to the strategic evolution of Oyster's employment-as-a-platform model.

What you'll do
- Oversee the management and regular updates of employment templates, policies, and processes across various jurisdictions to ensure they meet compliance standards and can scale effectively.
- Keep abreast of global legislative changes and evaluate their implications for Oyster's products and operations, implementing necessary modifications as needed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product and People to create compliant employment solutions that align with business objectives.
- Provide expert legal advice on a broad spectrum of employment law and compliance issues throughout the employee lifecycle, covering aspects such as hiring, compensation, leave, performance management, and termination processes.
- Support strategic initiatives such as Direct Expansion, transitioning from indirect to direct employment models, and the introduction of new employment products.
- Conduct research on complex employment law topics and distill legal analyses into straightforward, practical recommendations tailored for business needs.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive employment guides, knowledge resources, and compliance documentation to support global operations.
- Assist with labor inspections, audits, regulatory inquiries, and other compliance-related efforts concerning employment law.
- Utilize data, feedback, and operational insights to pinpoint risks, enhance processes, and strengthen Oyster's employment compliance framework.
- Advocate for the integration of AI, automation, and innovative processes to enhance team efficiency and expand legal support capabilities.
- Foster a collaborative, remote-first team culture while driving continuous improvement initiatives within Employment Products.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree, with admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience in employment law, ideally with a blend of experience in both law firms and in-house legal departments.
- In-depth understanding of employment law, including practical experience with standard employment processes such as drafting contracts, managing templates and policies, and advising on various employment matters while interpreting local labor regulations across multiple jurisdictions.
- Familiarity with the Employer of Record (EOR) model and its specific legal challenges; prior experience in an EOR context is preferred.
- Proven experience in managing multi-jurisdictional and cross-border employment issues, adept at navigating diverse legal frameworks.
- Strong business acumen, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders, while adopting a pragmatic approach to risk management.
- Exceptional analytical, communication, and research skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a dynamic, global environment.
- A technology-savvy mindset, including proficiency with AI and automation tools to enhance operational efficiency.
- A positive attitude and a readiness to assist with a variety of tasks as needed.
- A reliable home internet connection is essential.
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required.
