Staff Datebase Engineer

About the role

This role is for a senior engineer focused on how product teams manage and retrieve data efficiently as the company grows. You will be the go-to person for database selection and ensuring data access patterns are sustainable. Your work will involve leading major infrastructure initiatives and developing the tools product engineers use daily.

What you'll do

• Lead the transition of product data to new systems.
• Provide clear guidance to product engineers on data storage and access strategies.
• Develop reusable components like data synchronization tools and best practices for ORMs.
• Enhance the data platform to include caching, search, and event streaming capabilities.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience managing OLTP databases for user-facing applications, including schema design, indexing, and query tuning.
• Proficiency in both application code and database layer reasoning.
• Extensive experience with a major relational database, preferably Postgres, in high-traffic production environments.
• Proven ability to migrate data workloads, for example, from MongoDB to Postgres.
• Expertise in schema design, indexing, query optimization, and performing zero-downtime migrations on large, active tables.
• Experience scaling systems through substantial traffic and data increases, particularly in fields like advertising, fintech, large-scale SaaS, or marketplaces where understanding access patterns is crucial.
• Strong software engineering skills, including writing, reviewing, and deploying production code.
• Adaptable problem-solving approach.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
• A strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability.
• A builder's mindset.

Nice to have

• Experience creating shared platform tools such as data synchronization utilities, ORM guidelines, caching (Redis), search, or event streaming systems.
• Familiarity with payments or financial data.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and performance monitoring tools.
