Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Healthcare
Job description
About the role
You will own the end-to-end technical delivery of AI systems within complex healthcare organizations, acting as the primary technical lead from initial discovery through production handoff. This role requires you to architect and implement solutions that navigate strict regulatory environments while ensuring robust adoption and measurable impact. You will translate ambiguous clinical and operational workflows into concrete, production-ready AI applications in partnership with diverse stakeholders. Success in this position is defined by your ability to drive technical discovery and transform requirements into reliable, scalable systems. You will build deep credibility with customer engineers and operators to ensure solutions meet real-world needs. This position demands comfort with high ambiguity and the ability to synthesize constraints from clinical, technical, and regulatory perspectives. Ownership of the technical solution is central, while commercial or executive relationship ownership remains with the customer team.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own the technical solution end to end, conducting technical discovery, defining scope, architecting systems, implementing solutions, performing evaluations, and executing production deployments for healthcare customers.
- Partner with customer engineers, operators, and domain experts to clarify ambiguous problems, define project scope, and translate payer, provider, and health-system workflows into technical requirements and measurable success criteria.
- Design and implement production-grade AI applications and agentic systems that integrate with diverse customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, data platforms, electronic health records, claims systems, and operational tools.
- Build solutions incorporating appropriate safeguards for protected health information (PHI), HIPAA compliance, privacy, security, authorization, governance, auditability, and other regulated-delivery requirements.
- Define and operationalize evaluation frameworks, validation evidence, human-review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria to measure model and system quality against customer-specific acceptance thresholds.
- Analyze evaluation results, error patterns, and observability data while incorporating customer feedback to iteratively improve system reliability, performance, model selection, and workflow impact.
- Distill deployment learnings into reusable assets, including reference architectures, interoperability and integration patterns, evaluation harnesses, security controls, and technical primitives for healthcare and other regulated enterprise environments.
- Conduct hands-on implementation across the stack, writing and reviewing code, configuring infrastructure, and validating integrations to ensure solutions meet production standards.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Business, Research, Product, Engineering, and Security partners to align on priorities and incorporate feedback into evolving deployment strategies.
- Drive adoption by working directly with customer teams to ensure solutions deliver measurable workflow impact and meet defined business and clinical outcomes.
Requirements
- Bring 6+ years of software engineering, ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or comparable experience, with the technical depth required to own complex technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff.
- Have operated as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner who is trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous environments without direct supervision.
- Be deeply hands-on and have personally owned technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff for complex customer-facing or enterprise systems from start to finish.
- Have healthcare experience including payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems, or interoperability standards such as Epic, HL7, and FHIR within previous roles.
- Have exposure to provider or health-system workflows such as clinical operations, revenue cycle management, patient access, or contact centers; or to EHR and interoperability technologies such as Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, MEDITECH, HL7, FHIR, or health information exchanges.
- Have a track record of shipping complex systems as a forward deployed or customer engineer, an engineer inside a payer, provider, or health system, a builder at an EHR, interoperability, revenue cycle, payer-tech, or healthcare infrastructure company, a hands-on technical consultant or integrator, a solutions architect for regulated enterprises, or a technical founder or early engineering leader.
- Apply strong judgment to AI evaluation, privacy, security, governance, and reliability to ensure solutions meet the highest standards for regulated environments.
- Prior FDE titles, clinical credentials, and experience across every healthcare domain are not required for this role.
