Principal Software Engineer, Onboard Infrastructure

About the role

Nuro is seeking a technical leader to architect and scale the foundational software systems that power our autonomous driving platform. You will guide the design of high-performance onboard infrastructure to support our transition toward licensing automated driving software for robotaxis and personal vehicles.

What you'll do

• Architect and maintain the core software framework that enables autonomous vehicle operations.
• Design high-throughput systems capable of processing sensor data and control logic in real time.
• Lead technical strategy for the Nuro Driver and Nuro Toolkit software stacks.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering groups to ensure system reliability and performance across diverse vehicle platforms.
• Mentor senior engineers and establish technical standards for the infrastructure organization.

Requirements

• Extensive experience designing and deploying complex distributed systems or real-time software.
• Proven track record of leading large-scale engineering projects within the autonomous vehicle or robotics industry.
• Deep expertise in C++ and low-level systems programming.
• Strong understanding of Linux kernel internals, hardware abstraction, and performance optimization.
• Ability to drive technical decisions that balance immediate project needs with long-term architectural scalability.

Nice to have

• Experience working on licensing-focused software products or hardware-agnostic autonomous platforms.
• Background in safety-critical software development and certification processes.
• Familiarity with modern CI/CD pipelines for large-scale C++ codebases.
