About the role
Northwood Space develops advanced ground station infrastructure to support global satellite communications. We are looking for a mechanical engineer to lead the development of antenna hardware, structural components, and production tooling. In this capacity, you will own the complete mechanical lifecycle of critical ground station systems, ensuring that theoretical designs translate into robust, scalable hardware solutions. You will be responsible for defining the physical architecture that allows our communication platforms to operate reliably in demanding environments. The role requires you to translate abstract mission requirements into precise mechanical specifications while balancing performance, cost, and manufacturability. You will act as a key integrator, ensuring that all mechanical elements align with the broader system architecture and operational goals. Your work will directly influence the reliability and efficiency of satellite communications infrastructure deployed globally.

What you'll do
- Engineer structural architectures and load paths for antenna assemblies and support frameworks using advanced analysis methods.
- Design precision mechanisms and deployment systems that ensure reliable operation of ground station components across environmental conditions.
- Optimize RF waveguide filtering and feed structures to achieve target electrical performance while meeting strict mechanical constraints.
- Create detailed fabrication and assembly tooling strategies, including weldments, jigs, and test fixtures that streamline production.
- Conduct thermal management analysis and develop cooling solutions to maintain system stability under varying operational loads.
- Partner with cross-functional teams, including RF, electrical, manufacturing, and software, to resolve interface challenges and validate system integration.
- Establish and maintain compliance with mechanical, thermal, and environmental design standards relevant to aerospace and communications infrastructure.
- Lead structured design reviews and failure mode analyses to verify that project objectives, safety margins, and performance targets are met.
- Develop and iterate on CAD models and technical drawings that accurately define component geometry, tolerances, and material specifications.
- Drive design for manufacturability initiatives that reduce production complexity, minimize waste, and improve overall build quality.
- Document engineering decisions, trade studies, and validation results to ensure traceability and support future product iterations.
- Support qualification and acceptance testing activities, including test planning, data interpretation, and corrective action implementation.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, design reviews, and constructive feedback to strengthen team capability.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve design practices and solution robustness.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
- Possess 5+ years of professional experience in hardware design, development, and qualification within engineering-driven environments.
- Demonstrate a proven track record of moving products from initial concept through detailed design, validation, and production launch.
- Show expertise in design for manufacturability principles and proficiency in various fabrication processes, including machining, welding, and sheet metal.
- Exhibit deep knowledge of structural analysis methodologies, material selection criteria, and thermal management strategies for high-performance systems.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual to comply with ITAR regulations governing sensitive technology.
- Demonstrate the ability to work on-site 5 days per week and commit to extended hours or weekend schedules when project milestones require it.
- Apply strong analytical skills to interpret test results, troubleshoot mechanical issues, and refine designs based on empirical data.
- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, presenting technical concepts clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Advanced proficiency in Siemens NX for 3D modeling, surfacing, and detailed drafting of complex components.
- Experience performing mechanical or thermal simulations using ANSYS to validate performance and guide design decisions.
- Familiarity with environmental and reliability testing protocols, including vibration, thermal cycling, and altitude testing.
- Working knowledge of electrical components and RF system architectures to enable seamless integration with ground station hardware.

Compensation is determined based on level, experience, and market data.
