About the role

Join the team responsible for building and maintaining the distributed components of the Neo4j graph database. You will work on data replication, high availability, and horizontal scaling features that enterprise customers depend on. Your code will run in production environments across financial services, pharmaceuticals, communications, and LLM context graph applications worldwide.

What you'll do

• Work across the full database stack, from low-level systems programming involving concurrency, networking, and storage to higher-level distributed control plane development
• Architect systems designed to handle server failures, network instability, and query overloads with a focus on correctness and quality
• Collaborate with support engineers to diagnose difficult bugs and with SREs to maintain the database-as-a-service offering
• Partner with product managers on new feature design and implementation
• Dedicate time to learning and experimentation in areas like cloud-native architectures, networking, and distributed consensus algorithms

Requirements

• Ability to work independently in a flexible development environment
• Clear communication skills when discussing complex technical topics
• Willingness to collaborate on challenging problems and features
• Hands-on experience with distributed systems through development, administration, or usage
• Experience with or strong interest in learning modern, high-performance, concurrent Java programming

Nice to have

• Background building stateful distributed systems such as databases, message brokers, or stream processing platforms
• Familiarity with orchestration tools like Kubernetes
• Existing knowledge of Java, the Java ecosystem, or JVM internals
• Experience navigating large codebases
