About the role
You will own entire mechatronic systems from initial concept through to high-volume production, driving the design, build, and validation of robots that operate autonomously on demanding construction sites. You will scope broad and novel capabilities, perform rigorous back-of-envelope calculations, and translate those insights into practical hardware and firmware architectures. This role requires you to select actuators and sensors, integrate complex systems, and develop firmware to ensure reliable real-world operation. You will debug hardware issues both in our controlled office environment and in active construction zones, testing on live builds to iterate toward robust, scalable solutions. Once you have proven your ability to own tightly scoped deliverables, you will expand your impact to lead broader problem spaces alongside a small, multidisciplinary team. You will be genuinely excited to tackle the hard problems of full on-site autonomy, construction-scale payloads, reliable operation at height, and millimetre-level positioning across our entire stack.

What you'll do
Imagine a fleet of autonomous robots rolling onto a construction site in the morning and by sundown, a fully built, beautiful home stands ready for a family to move in. That is the future Monumental is building, and your work will focus on broad, novel problems that unlock autonomous construction at scale. You will push toward complete autonomy for our masonry systems, including automated wall-anchor installation and mortar pointing to produce beautiful brickwork, while designing autonomous lift platforms and fully automated material-supply to keep our fleet working uninterrupted across large, messy sites. You will design for extreme reliability, ensuring our robots are tough enough to survive months of harsh construction conditions yet remain serviceable and redeployable in under 24 hours. Your responsibilities will include building next-generation hardware to expand what our robots can do, such as higher-precision brick placement, larger payloads, expanded build envelopes, hot-swappable end effectors, and operation in tight, constrained spaces like scaffolding. You will get hands-on in the field, joining real home deployments to stress-test systems and uncover edge-case problems that can only be found on active sites, which will guide new critical features and long-term product needs. You will translate these field insights into improved system designs, balancing performance, safety, and manufacturability. The challenges are significant, but our approach focuses on identifying key risks and attacking them through rapid prototyping instead of lengthy design cycles, giving you high autonomy and minimal drag with few meetings and no unnecessary approvals. You will work on the complete stack in-house, ensuring seamless coordination between hardware, software, controls, and vision engineering to ship complete projects that function reliably in the real world.
Requirements
You should be someone who can design hardware from scratch and are comfortable working at the interface between mechanical, software, controls, and vision engineering without needing to develop control systems or vision algorithms yourself. You must have a strong bias for speed and simplicity, excelling at developing proof-of-concept prototypes in the shortest possible time by sourcing all required components and fabricating necessary parts in-house, whether through 3D printing, CNC milling, or turning. You should be able to integrate sensors and actuators into functional systems, debug issues systematically, and validate designs through rigorous testing. You must be comfortable deploying and testing on live construction sites, using those experiences to iterate toward robust, scalable, and safe solutions. You should be genuinely excited to tackle difficult problems in construction robotics alongside a capable and supportive team that values ownership and execution. You must be based in Amsterdam and able to work onsite five days a week, as the role requires hands-on presence in our fully equipped workshop and robot testing floor.
