Senior Risk Strategist at Mercury
About the role
Mercury is building a comprehensive financial platform for startups, aiming to provide the simplest and most secure banking experience. This role is critical for understanding customer interactions and mitigating financial, regulatory, and reputational risks. You will be a key contributor to our Risk Strategy team, bringing analytical rigor and domain knowledge to protect the company and its users.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Lead the strategy and execution for card fraud prevention, and contribute to broader fraud initiatives.
- Utilize data analysis to develop fraud controls, reduce risk, and enhance customer experience, while managing trade-offs.
- Collaborate with Compliance and Legal teams to ensure all solutions meet regulatory standards.
- Drive cross-functional projects with Product, Engineering, and Operations to implement scalable risk management solutions.
- Act as a subject matter expert on card and transaction fraud, identifying and addressing systemic weaknesses.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators for risk effectiveness and customer impact.
Requirements
- A minimum of 6 years in an analytical position, with at least 4 years focused on card fraud detection and strategy. Fintech or startup experience is beneficial.
- Profound understanding of card and transaction fraud, including authorization controls and card network regulations.
- Experience developing and implementing fraud strategies across related areas such as onboarding, ACH, checks, real-time payments, and account takeover.
- Proficiency in customer risk scoring, modeling, and process automation.
- Strong SQL skills and the ability to translate data insights into actionable strategies.
- Demonstrated success in balancing risk, compliance, and customer experience in collaborative environments.
- Excellent communication abilities to clearly articulate complex risk concepts and recommendations.
- Capacity to navigate uncertainty and make informed decisions with incomplete information.
- A curious and growth-oriented mindset, eager to tackle fraud challenges at all stages of product lifecycle.

- US employees: Base salary range of $200,700 - $250,900.
- Canadian employees: Base salary range of CAD $189,700 - $237,100.
