About the role
Mercury is hiring a Senior Product & Regulatory Counsel to join its growing legal team. This role provides essential guidance on product development, regulatory compliance, and risk management across the company's financial services platform. The counsel will work closely with product, engineering, and business teams to ensure that Mercury's offerings meet all applicable legal and regulatory standards in the United States and Canada. The position is based in one of the listed office locations or can be performed remotely within the specified countries, offering flexibility to candidates who prefer a distributed work arrangement, and the counsel will play a critical role in shaping Mercury's compliance posture as the company continues to expand its product suite.

What you'll do
Review and advise on product features before launch to identify legal and regulatory implications
Draft and update internal policies related to consumer protection, data privacy, and financial regulations
Collaborate with product managers to assess compliance risks associated with new product initiatives
Monitor changes in federal and state financial services regulations that may affect Mercury's operations
Coordinate with external regulatory counsel and government affairs teams on filings and inquiries
Conduct legal research on emerging fintech regulations and interpret their impact on product strategy
Prepare documentation and reports for internal stakeholders regarding regulatory obligations and deadlines
Serve as a subject matter expert on regulatory matters during cross-functional meetings and reviews
Support the development of compliance training materials for product and engineering teams
Evaluate vendor contracts and third-party integrations for regulatory and legal risk exposure
Review third-party service agreements and data processing arrangements to ensure regulatory compliance
Advise the leadership team on strategic decisions that carry legal or regulatory consequences
Requirements
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and active bar membership in a U.S. state
Seven or more years of experience in product law, regulatory affairs, or financial services compliance
Demonstrated experience advising technology or fintech companies on evolving regulatory frameworks
Strong understanding of consumer protection laws, data privacy regulations, and banking compliance requirements
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate legal concepts for non-lawyers
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver clear legal guidance under tight timelines
Experience working collaboratively with product, engineering, and business development teams in a fast-paced environment
Willingness to work in one of the listed office locations or remotely within Canada or the United States
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail in legal and regulatory documents
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
Nice to have
Prior experience at a fintech startup or a company operating in the banking and payments space
Familiarity with federal and state money transmission licensing requirements and registration processes
Background in handling regulatory audits, examinations, or government investigations
Knowledge of international regulatory frameworks for financial technology products and services
Experience working with legal and compliance teams in a high-growth technology environment
Prior exposure to securities laws or investment regulatory frameworks is a plus
Skills & tools
Proficiency in legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis
Experience with contract management and legal document automation platforms
Familiarity with regulatory technology tools used for compliance monitoring and reporting
Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite and collaboration tools such as Slack and Confluence
Ability to use project management software for tracking regulatory deadlines and deliverables
Comfort with data analysis tools for assessing compliance risk across product lines
Practical notes
This role may require occasional travel to Mercury offices in San Francisco, New York, or Portland
The position offers flexibility to work remotely within Canada or the United States as permitted by employment law
