Job description
Head of Technical Program Management at Mercury
About the role
This position is for a strategic leader who will orchestrate complex technical initiatives, ensuring alignment and successful execution across multiple departments. You will be responsible for the overall architecture and delivery of critical programs, much like a master builder overseeing the construction of a grand structure.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Oversee the program for Mercury's bank charter and governance efforts, managing sequencing, dependencies, risks, and decisions across engineering, product, design, and data teams.
- Establish the technical program management framework for the banking organization, including processes, tools, reporting, and standards for efficient cross-functional collaboration.
- Develop automation and intelligent workflows to enhance program execution efficiency and quality.
- Create and deliver executive-level reports, summarizing extensive information into clear dashboards and concise updates on key developments.
- Evaluate and challenge timelines, sequencing, and estimates with engineering and product leaders, ensuring realistic planning.
- Build, mentor, and manage a team of Technical Program Managers while also directly leading specific program areas.
- Navigate and resolve ambiguity by clarifying ownership, facilitating trade-off discussions, and fostering productive debate to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Maintain rigorous documentation and auditability standards required for regulated and governance-intensive work.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years in program management, engineering, or product leadership, with at least 3 years of experience managing Technical Program Managers or Program Managers.
- A technical foundation, preferably in engineering, technical program management, or senior product roles, with the ability to discuss architectural trade-offs, timelines, and estimates with engineering leaders.
- Prior experience working within regulated environments; fintech or banking experience is highly desirable.
- A proven history of building program management functions or operational systems, rather than solely managing individual projects.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, effective in cross-functional settings, with executives, peers, and direct reports.
- A proactive, solutions-oriented approach, comfortable with ambiguity and adept at bringing clarity to complex situations.
Nice to have
- Experience at a fintech company that is building or operating its own banking infrastructure.
