About the role
Marqeta is seeking a legal professional to advise on product development and regulatory compliance within the payments industry. This role involves guiding complex initiatives and managing legal risks associated with financial products.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Provide expert counsel on laws and regulations governing prepaid, debit, and credit card products, including EFTA/Regulation E, Durbin/Regulation II, TILA/Regulation Z, and card network requirements.
- Offer legal guidance on payment laws, financial services regulations, consumer protection, and enforcement actions for current and new product features.
- Evaluate legal risks, propose mitigation strategies, and advise product, engineering, risk, and go-to-market teams to ensure the integrity of the financial platform.
- Analyze emerging regulations in the payments and financial services sectors to determine their impact on Marqeta's offerings.
- Collaborate with internal teams, sponsor banks, and clients to facilitate the introduction of new products, features, and campaigns.
- Manage external legal counsel relationships.
Requirements
- A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active standing in a State Bar.
- A minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience, either in-house at a fintech or banking company, or at a respected law firm, with a focus on prepaid, debit, or credit card products.
- Comprehensive understanding of the payments industry, including the legal and regulatory landscape for banks and ecosystem participants like issuer processors and program managers.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects independently and as part of a team, meeting demanding deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong business acumen with a practical approach to risk assessment, balancing legal risk mitigation with business objectives.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to work effectively both independently and collaboratively, and to influence outcomes.
- Ability to engage in constructive debate and challenge others respectfully.
- Advanced problem-solving skills, with the capacity to quickly analyze issues, evaluate solutions, and empower oneself and others.

Compensation:
- Base salary range:
- National Tier: $188,800 - $236,000
- Premium Tier: $204,600 - $255,800
- Premium Plus Tier: $220,400 - $275,500
- Annual bonus eligibility.
