This role involves taking concepts from initial ideas to detailed CAD models, focusing on the overall design of advanced aerial vehicles. You will be instrumental in translating mission needs into tangible, manufacturable hardware.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop complete vehicle configurations based on mission and system requirements.
- Conduct initial sizing and layout studies to define viable vehicle architectures.
- Create and maintain precise CAD models, including the vehicle's outer mold line, internal component placement, and major assemblies.
- Assess design trade-offs related to aerodynamic performance, weight, manufacturing feasibility, modularity, and subsystem integration.
- Collaborate closely with aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, guidance, manufacturing, and flight-test teams throughout the vehicle development cycle.
- Generate engineering drawings and assist with prototype construction.
- Present technical recommendations and design trade-off analyses to engineering leadership.
Requirements
- For entry-level candidates: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar field, with relevant experience from internships, research, Formula SAE, CubeSat, UAS, or aerospace design projects.
- For senior candidates: At least 5 years of experience designing aircraft, missiles, or unmanned systems.
- Experience with conceptual vehicle sizing or preliminary aircraft/missile design.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as NX, CATIA, or Creo.
- Understanding of aircraft or missile geometry, component packaging, and interdisciplinary design considerations.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Nice to have
- Experience with conceptual aircraft or missile design methodologies.
- Background in high-speed, high-altitude, or tactical UAS development.
- Knowledge of low-observable design principles.
- Experience with Class A surfacing or advanced CAD surfacing techniques.
- Familiarity with parametric CAD and model-based design.
- Experience in flight testing or prototype development.
