Engineering Manager, Maps & Search

About the role

We are seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Maps & Search division, which manages our high-traffic home discovery platform. You will guide a senior team in building AI-integrated workflows while maintaining a system that processes one billion requests every month. This role requires a leader who stays deeply involved in technical architecture and code while mentoring a high-performing engineering group.

What you'll do

• Manage the full lifecycle of the team, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, and career development.
• Remain technically active by participating in code reviews, architectural design, and complex debugging.
• Oversee the scalability, latency, and relevance of a search system handling hundreds of millions of listings.
• Enhance the home search experience across web and mobile to drive engagement and lead conversion.
• Integrate LLMs and intelligent ranking models into search workflows to improve listing discovery.
• Collaborate with product and design leads to define the roadmap and ensure high-quality delivery of features.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including senior or staff-level roles.
• 2+ years of experience managing engineering teams.
• Practical experience with search, relevance, ranking, or retrieval systems.
• Proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, and React.
• Experience building and maintaining scalable microservices in cloud environments, specifically AWS.
• Familiarity with GraphQL, event-driven architecture like Kafka, and databases including PostgreSQL and OpenSearch.
• Background in operating high-traffic, low-latency production systems, including incident response and SLO management.
• Experience driving initiatives from initial concept to production within a SaaS environment.
