About the role
We are establishing a new data and analytics division within our engineering department and seeking a leader to direct its growth. You will manage the strategy and implementation of our data infrastructure, ensuring that information is collected, stored, and utilized to provide insights across our B2B SaaS platform. This is a player-coach position that requires balancing hands-on architectural contributions with the recruitment and mentorship of a high-performing engineering team.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop and execute the technical strategy for our analytical data infrastructure.
- Create the architecture for our reporting framework to enable other engineering teams to embed analytics into their product areas.
- Manage the transition and synchronization between transactional databases and the analytical layer.
- Collaborate with product leadership to convert business requirements into a technical roadmap.
- Recruit, hire, and supervise a team of data and analytics engineers.
- Lead ADR reviews with Principal and Staff engineers to finalize major architectural changes.
- Implement observability for data pipelines, including SLAs for quality and freshness, alerting, and incident management.
- Define data governance standards to ensure reliability across the engineering organization.
- Maintain technical involvement by reviewing schemas, optimizing queries, and contributing to design documentation.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics engineering, with at least 2 years in a technical lead or management role.
- Proficiency in AWS data services including Aurora PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redshift, and S3.
- Expertise in ELT/ETL pipeline design, data modeling, and creating analytics-ready datasets.
- Experience building reporting frameworks used by multiple product teams.
- Proven ability to manage data pipeline observability, monitoring, and incident response.
- Active use of AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude in daily workflows.
- Experience integrating AI-driven features into SaaS products.
- Demonstrated success in hiring and developing engineering talent.
- Ability to explain complex data architecture to non-technical stakeholders.
- Must be located in or near the Charlotte, NC metro area.
Nice to have
- Experience with in-app or embedded analytics for SaaS products.
- Familiarity with AWS event streaming tools such as Kinesis, MSK, EventBridge, or Kafka.
- Experience with AWS Glue, Athena, or Lake Formation.
- Background working at B2B SaaS companies with 50 to 200 employees.
- Exposure to regulated software environments like SOC 2 or HIPAA.
- Experience with BI or visualization tools such as Metabase, Looker, or Tableau.
