Senior Software Engineer II, AI Native, Mobile, Experimentation & ML Intelligence

Life360 is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to join our AI Native Experimentation & ML Intelligence team. This role is central to shaping how we learn and grow through data-driven product decisions. You will be instrumental in designing and implementing growth experiments across our mobile application, while also advancing our AI-native engineering practices.

What you'll do

• Develop and launch significant Android features and growth experiments focused on user onboarding, activation, feature adoption, subscription conversion, and retention.
• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, data scientists, and analysts to transform hypotheses into actionable experiments and integrate learnings into future development.
• Integrate AI tools, such as Claude Code, as a primary development partner for tasks including specification generation, Kotlin code creation, testing, verification, and code reviews.
• Ensure precise instrumentation for experiments, including exposure logging and analytics, to provide reliable data for downstream teams.
• Deliver polished, high-performing, and dependable Android experiences to millions of users, paying close attention to performance metrics like startup time, memory usage, battery consumption, and crash rates.
• Contribute to defining and documenting AI-Native Android engineering standards and best practices for wider adoption within the mobile organization.
• Participate in architectural discussions, code reviews, and foster a culture of quality and ongoing improvement within the Android codebase.
• Engage in on-call duties and incident response for mobile experiments and releases.
• Utilize AI-driven workflows to enhance delivery speed and outcomes without compromising quality.
• Mentor junior team members, contribute to team processes, and help evolve the team's AI-native engineering methodologies.
• Maintain and improve the performance, reliability, and accessibility of the Android features you own.

Requirements

• A minimum of 6 years of professional experience in Android software engineering, with a track record of shipping consumer-scale production applications.
• At least 1 year of practical experience in prompting, evaluating, and developing solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs).
• Strong command of Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, along with a deep understanding of the Android View system and the modern Android development toolchain (Android Studio, Kotlin Coroutines, Flow).
• Demonstrated experience with Android architectural patterns such as MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture, Jetpack components (ViewModel, Navigation), and dependency injection frameworks like Hilt or Dagger within large, multi-team codebases.
• Familiarity with mobile experimentation concepts, including feature flagging, A/B testing, exposure logging, holdouts, and guardrail metrics.
• Solid understanding of mobile performance, memory management, battery optimization, ANR (Application Not Responding) issues, and crash analysis using tools like Android Studio Profiler, Perfetto/Systrace, Macrobenchmark, and Crashlytics or equivalent.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for Android development (e.g., Gradle, Fastlane, GitHub Actions, Bitrise) and modular build systems (Gradle modules, Maven).
• Extensive experience with agentic workflows, prompt engineering, managing context windows, and function calling. You should understand the research-plan-implement cycle and be able to guide AI agents effectively.
• A Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience with experimentation platforms such as Statsig, LaunchDarkly, Optimizely, Eppo, GrowthBook, or similar.
• Background in mobile analytics pipelines (e.g., Amplitude, Segment, downstream processing in Snowflake/Databricks).
• Familiarity with Bayesian or sequential testing methodologies and their client-side implementation implications.
• Prior work on subscription, paywall, or onboarding user flows for consumer-facing products.
• Contributions to open-source mobile projects or internal developer tooling.

Practical notes

• For candidates based in the US, the salary range is $118,500 to $216,500 USD. For candidates based in Canada, the salary range is $171,500 to $201,000 CAD. The final salary will depend on individual background, experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors.
