About the role
Level creates learning technology that helps students develop academic and life skills through interactive design. You will join our engineering team to build and refine the core engine systems that power our educational games. This position focuses on low-level development, internal tooling, and performance optimization to support our broader mission of improving student engagement.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain engine components including threading, asset loading, and memory management.
- Create and improve internal tools and build systems to support our distributed team.
- Profile and optimize performance-critical code paths for target platforms.
- Partner with artists, technical designers, and gameplay engineers to refine engine usability.
- Define engineering standards for systems-level code documentation, testing, and quality.
- Participate in architectural planning and technical roadmaps to ensure long-term scalability.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, specifically in runtime infrastructure, game engine systems, or low-level tooling.
- Proficiency in modern C++ and experience with systems-level debugging and performance analysis.
- Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and build systems like Bazel or CMake.
- Understanding of multithreading, platform-level constraints, and memory management.
- Experience shipping at least one product on mobile, console, or PC platforms.
- Ability to communicate complex technical tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical team members.
Nice to have
- Experience with adaptive learning platforms, educational technology, or learning management systems.
- Background in game engine programming such as physics, rendering, animation, or optimization.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and cloud platforms like Google Cloud, Azure, or AWS.
- Experience developing mobile games for Android or iOS.
- Knowledge of AI/ML applications or data analytics in gaming or education.
- Familiarity with inclusive design principles and accessibility standards.
- History of contributing to open-source projects or publishing educational apps or games.
- Experience with immersive learning or AR/VR technologies.
