This role is for a backend-heavy engineer who thrives on autonomy and end-to-end ownership.

What you'll do
Design and develop backend services for financial workflows and transaction processing using Java and JVM frameworks.
Take full ownership of features, from data modeling and service implementation to API creation and frontend development.
Construct and maintain APIs for internal systems, external partners, and our user interfaces.
Contribute to architectural decisions and the evolution of service-oriented, event-driven systems.
Enhance system reliability, performance, and observability across the entire technology stack.
Refactor and modernize existing systems as the platform expands.
Investigate and resolve production issues, implementing lasting solutions.
Collaborate with product and design teams to translate requirements into functional, well-tested features.
Participate in code reviews and uphold high engineering standards.
Utilize AI development tools like Claude for tasks such as prototyping, code review, debugging, and documentation, ensuring the correctness and security of all delivered work.
Apply strong engineering judgment when evaluating AI-generated code, verifying its accuracy, maintainability, security, performance, and adherence to architectural guidelines.
Use AI to understand new codebases, diagnose defects, explore implementation options, and identify potential edge cases.
Handle sensitive information responsibly, adhering to company security policies.
Share effective AI workflows and best practices to boost team productivity and quality.
Requirements
5+ years of experience as a backend engineer in a production environment.
Extensive experience building backend services with Java and modern JVM frameworks.
Proven experience designing APIs and service-oriented architectures.
Experience working with relational databases and managing large datasets.
Familiarity with distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
Working knowledge of a modern reactive frontend framework (Angular preferred; Vue or React experience is acceptable) and TypeScript.
Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
Hands-on professional experience using AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude, Copilot, Cursor) in your daily workflow.
Strong ability to discern when to rely on AI tools and when human oversight is critical, especially for security, data handling, and financial processes.
High degree of self-reliance, with the ability to solve problems independently and lead initiatives from start to finish with minimal supervision.
Excellent debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Experience in regulated industries like financial services or cannabis is beneficial.

Practical notes
Salary range: $145,000 - $200,000 USD per year.
