Senior Data Scientist
Job description
Senior Data Scientist at Komodo Health.
About the role
Komodo Health aims to reduce the global burden of disease by using data more intelligently. The company has built the Healthcare Map, a comprehensive view of the US healthcare system, combining de-identified patient data with algorithms and clinical expertise. This map powers software applications that help partners across the healthcare ecosystem gain insights into patient behaviors, treatment patterns, and unmet needs.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Become the primary expert on Komodo's national and subnational projection models, understanding their data, assumptions, and estimation framework.
- Develop and implement evaluation practices and diagnostic tools to identify accuracy issues, drift, or bias early, using creative benchmarks where direct ground truth is unavailable.
- Resolve customer-reported data anomalies through systematic root-cause analysis and clear communication of methodologies to build confidence in market estimates.
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and validation of models in collaboration with product engineering, enhancing methodological standards with each release.
- Analyze extensive Komodo healthcare data using SQL and Python or R to evaluate projection model inputs, outputs, and behavior across different therapeutic areas and geographies.
- Design and conduct evaluation studies, including constructing benchmarks, quantifying consistency and uncertainty, and building diagnostic tools for quick model assessment and debugging.
- Investigate questions from customers and internal teams, reproducing issues, forming hypotheses, and isolating root causes through structured analysis.
- Prepare and deliver clear methodological explanations through briefs, walkthroughs, and direct customer discussions, translating complex model mechanics into actionable insights.
- Review and contribute to model code, specifications, and design documents in partnership with product engineering, validating changes pre- and post-release.
- Maintain methodology documentation and evaluation reports, tracking model behavior across data refreshes and releases to proactively identify emerging issues.
Requirements
- Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Statistics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of industry experience applying statistical modeling and estimation to large-scale real-world healthcare data.
- Deep understanding of US healthcare claims data, including coding systems (ICD, CPT/HCPCS, NDC), drug billing across medical and pharmacy benefits, distinctions between open and closed data sources, and how data generation/processing issues affect analytics.
- Proven ability to evaluate model quality when ground truth is limited, demonstrating creativity in designing rigorous validation approaches under such constraints.
- Strong diagnostic and critical-thinking skills, capable of addressing ambiguous questions, forming hypotheses, and systematically isolating root causes with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable engaging directly with customers on technical subjects, including active listening, accessible methodological explanations, and maintaining credibility.
- Proficient in SQL and either Python or R for large-scale data analysis and statistical modeling.
Nice to have
- Direct experience with projection or extrapolation methodologies, such as estimating population-level volumes from partial samples, market sizing, weighting, or calibration.
- Experience with Bayesian statistics and its application to real-world estimation problems.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., coding copilots, agentic workflows) to speed up analysis, prototyping, and documentation.
