Engineering Manager, Activation
Job description
Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money - bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses.
Relay is entering an exciting phase of growth, and we're hiring an Engineering Manager for the Activation team to help scale what comes next. You'll be making high-impact, strategic decisions every day, with direct influence on shaping a product used and loved by thousands of small businesses.
Our Activation team owns the customer-facing journey from the moment a business registers, through funding, to the first time Relay does real work for it. In this role, you'll work as one of our growth engineering teams to build the path that carries a business from sign-up to its first real transaction, and bring back the ones that stall along the way. You'll ship simple, intuitive experiences, alongside a team that moves quickly and ships thoughtfully.
What You'll Be Doing
- Delivery Leadership: Lead the planning and delivery of engineering initiatives, ensuring projects meet quality standards, timelines, and business goals; drive clarity in priorities and execution across the team
- Team Operations: Establish and maintain effective engineering processes, including sprint planning, code reviews, and technical design reviews; continuously refine team rituals to enable high-quality, predictable delivery
- Technical Strategy: Partner with senior leadership to shape and execute the technical vision, ensuring alignment with company goals and customer needs
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to align engineering efforts with user needs and business objectives; enable teams to solve complex problems and deliver impactful solutions
- People Management & Development: Build and grow a high-performing engineering team through hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance management
- Culture & Growth: Foster a collaborative, feedback-driven environment that supports continuous learning and professional development; encourage mentorship and knowledge sharing while creating opportunities for team development
Who You Are

- You're passionate about building and scaling engineering teams, and deeply invested in growing and developing people to do their best work
- You communicate clearly and effectively, and bring calm and clarity in times of ambiguity and change
- You're a pragmatic decision-maker with a customer-centric mindset, able to navigate tradeoffs around scope, technical debt, and timelines while keeping customer needs front and center
- You think creatively and resourcefully, embracing experimentation and AI to solve complex problems within resource constraints
- You thrive in cross-functional environments, bringing teams together, connecting the dots, and driving initiatives that deliver meaningful impact
Our Tech Stack
