IISc was established in 1909 by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Mysore royal family, and the Government of India. The institute runs advanced scientific and technological research and teaching from a 440-acre campus in Bengaluru. More than 42 departments and centres sit under six divisions, with about 4,000 students on postgraduate, PhD, and a four-year undergraduate research programme. The Government of India named it an Institution of Eminence in 2018. Work spans basic science and applications meant to serve industry and society, including climate, healthcare, water, and energy.
