Principal Engineer - Work Profiles

About the role

ID.me is looking for a Principal Software Development Engineer to lead the technical strategy for our Work Profiles and Communities platforms. You will design the architecture for how identity affiliation is structured, validated, and shared across our ecosystem to support millions of users and hundreds of partners.

What you'll do

• Architect the long-term data model for person-to-organization and person-to-credential relationships.
• Manage API contracts, including the Affiliation Profile API and OIDC extensions, ensuring compatibility and governance.
• Establish design standards that allow for the rapid, self-service creation of new community profiles.
• Build modular validation components such as document verification, registry integrations, and enterprise SSO.
• Oversee the profile lifecycle, including issuance, expiration, and revocation of credentials.
• Mentor senior engineering staff on identity architecture and complex data modeling.
• Ensure all platform designs meet rigorous security and compliance requirements for regulated industries.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a history of serving as a technical authority for complex, multi-system domains.
• Deep expertise in data modeling, specifically regarding entity-attribute and affiliation structures.
• Proven experience designing and governing APIs for source-of-truth systems.
• Ability to drive technical strategy and alignment across teams without direct authority.
• Experience building configuration-driven systems where logic is defined by data rather than hardcoding.
• Bachelor degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience modeling person-to-organization relationships and affiliation evidence.
• Background in designing platform systems that function as a self-service factory for new instances.
• Knowledge of NIST 800-63 IAL2/AAL2 standards and identity lifecycle management.
• Proficiency with OIDC and OAuth 2.0.
• Experience with graph databases and their modeling tradeoffs compared to relational databases.
• Familiarity with Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Identifiers.
• Experience in regulated sectors like healthcare, finance, or federal government.
• Cloud-native infrastructure experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.

Practical notes

Salary: $214,972 to $307,125 USD annually. Compensation includes base salary, bonus potential, and equity.
