Senior/Staff People Operations Specialist at heron-power.
About the role
Heron Power is developing power electronics hardware to modernize the electrical grid and support renewable energy integration. We are looking for our first dedicated HR professional to establish our internal operations as we transition from R&D into manufacturing. You will report to the VP of Finance and Operations to build the systems, policies, and culture necessary for our growing team.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Manage the full employee lifecycle including onboarding, background checks, I-9 verification, and offboarding procedures.
- Coordinate performance management cycles, compensation adjustments, and internal promotions alongside leadership.
- Oversee payroll processing for both salaried and hourly staff while maintaining accurate timekeeping and attendance records.
- Administer company benefits programs, including annual renewals and open enrollment periods.
- Serve as the primary contact for employee relations, manager coaching, and workplace investigations.
- Ensure company compliance with federal and California labor laws, including handbook maintenance and safety training coordination.
- Collaborate with IT and Finance to implement and integrate HRIS and payroll software.
- Support contractor management and immigration processes in coordination with external legal counsel.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in HR or people operations, including senior-level roles at high-growth organizations.
- Direct experience managing payroll for non-exempt and hourly employees.
- Proven track record of owning HRIS and payroll system implementations.
- Deep understanding of California and federal employment regulations.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with high levels of discretion and professional judgment.
Nice to have
- Previous experience as the first or early HR hire at a Series A through Series C startup.
- Background supporting a scaling manufacturing or warehouse workforce.
- PHR, SPHR, or SHRM-CP/SCP certification.
