Intern, Automation Controls Engineer

About the role

Heron-power is developing advanced power electronics to modernize the electrical grid. We are seeking an intern to help build and document automation systems for our pilot production line and lab. This role involves hands-on work with control systems and contributing to operational standards.

What you'll do

• Assemble control panels, construct enclosures and mounting brackets, and assist with the mechanical setup of automation machinery.
• Select, procure, and install various sensors and field devices, including necessary cabling and labeling, to meet production specifications.
• Support the programming of PLCs and HMIs under supervision, adhering to established naming and documentation guidelines.
• Review and mark up electrical schematics, and use presentation and spreadsheet software to outline project scope.
• Contribute to the creation of standard operating procedures for the pilot line and laboratory equipment.
• Monitor project schedules and provide progress updates to relevant parties.

Requirements

• Possess an organized and systematic approach to tasks, with a natural inclination for thorough written documentation.
• Demonstrate a proactive attitude in seeking optimal solutions before beginning construction, rather than working independently.
• Capable of adhering to and expanding upon existing engineering standards rather than creating new ones.
• Fundamental knowledge of electrical and control principles, including sensor operation, digital and analog inputs/outputs, and basic wiring.

Nice to have

• Prior experience with sheet metal fabrication or in a workshop setting.
• Some familiarity with PLC/HMI programming, such as basic sensor logic or ladder logic.
• Background in drafting electrical or mechanical schematics.
• Experience with sourcing industrial components from suppliers like AutomationDirect.
• Exposure to HTTP/REST and other software application programming interfaces.
