Job description
Senior Applications Engineer at heron-power.
About the role
Heron Power develops power electronics designed to modernize the electrical grid through scalable hardware. You will join a team of industry veterans to validate solid state transformer technology for data centers, battery storage, and solar installations.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Manage end-to-end application testing for the SuperBBU battery pack and SST, focusing on ripple mitigation, backup performance, and power-loss profiles.
- Coordinate integration testing at pilot sites, including EMS-to-SST communication, black start procedures, and grid-forming functions.
- Validate SST integration with commercial SCADA, DAS, and EMS systems.
- Lead initial pilot deployments by analyzing field data and collaborating with software and firmware teams to refine product features.
- Develop Python-based automation scripts to control power converters, manage test sequences, and log data.
- Perform high-power lab operations, including setup of chillers, contactors, instrumentation, and cabling.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional experience in energy storage, power electronics, grid systems, or EV hardware.
- Deep understanding of DC circuit fundamentals, including parasitics, resonances, inductive spikes, and slew rates.
- Ability to bridge the gap between simulation results and physical test data.
- Proficiency in scripting for test automation, instrument control, and data analysis.
- Experience with battery management systems, power converters, thermal loops, and DC protection hardware.
- Practical lab skills using DAQ systems, power analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
- Familiarity with communication protocols like Modbus TCP and CAN.
Nice to have
- Background in grid-forming inverters or solid state transformers.
- Experience with utility-scale BESS commissioning or EMS integration.
