Handshake is seeking a Software Engineer II to develop its Reinforcement Learning Environments (RLE) platform. This platform provides interactive systems where advanced AI models learn to perform real-world tasks. The role involves creating simulated workflows across various domains, generating interaction data for AI training and evaluation.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and scale the Reinforcement Learning Environments (RLE) platform and its supporting infrastructure.
• Collaborate with US-based Engineering, Research, Product, and Operations teams on project roadmaps.
• Create and implement scalable backend services and data generation pipelines.
• Develop modular environment domains that integrate with model training and evaluation.
• Enhance platform reliability, observability, performance, and developer efficiency.
• Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to architectural decisions.
• Produce high-quality, maintainable code and help improve engineering standards.

Requirements

• 6 or more years of professional software engineering experience in backend systems, distributed systems, or platform infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of TypeScript, React, and modern backend architectures.
• Solid understanding of PostgreSQL, data modeling, distributed systems, and system design.
• Experience building and managing production systems on AWS or GCP.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in fast-paced, unclear situations.
• Experience collaborating with globally distributed engineering teams, including those in the US.

Nice to have

• Experience with reinforcement learning infrastructure, simulation systems, or AI evaluation platforms.
• Experience building internal developer platforms or workflow orchestration systems.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience supporting applied machine learning or AI research teams.
• Experience working in a rapidly growing startup or high-growth engineering organization.
