About the role
GRAIL is seeking an engineer to build and deploy AI-driven software that supports early cancer detection. You will work alongside scientists and clinicians to develop scalable applications that integrate machine learning into our laboratory and enterprise systems.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design, build, and maintain AI-enabled software, machine learning services, and enterprise APIs.
- Implement solutions using Generative AI, LLMs, and RAG to enhance business workflows.
- Partner with cross-functional teams including Data Science, Product, and Regulatory to translate requirements into technical specifications.
- Manage the full lifecycle of AI models, including prompt engineering, evaluation, monitoring, and deployment.
- Create CI/CD pipelines and automated tests to ensure software reliability.
- Collaborate on architecture reviews, code documentation, and technical planning.
- Support production operations and resolve integration issues.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI, Data Science, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of professional software development experience.
- Proficiency in Python plus one additional language such as Java, C++, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), microservices, and containerization.
- Knowledge of CI/CD, source control, and Agile methodologies.
- Understanding of database systems, data engineering, and REST APIs.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity fundamentals, HIPAA, and secure coding practices.
- Ability to work on-site at least 60% of the work week.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Hugging Face, LangChain, or OpenAI APIs.
- Background in healthcare, biotechnology, diagnostics, or life sciences.
- Experience with FDA-regulated software environments and data integrity validation.

Practical notes
- Salary: $99,000 to $121,000 in Sunnyvale, CA; $86,000 to $105,000 in Durham, NC.
- Compensation includes potential annual bonus/incentives and a benefits package (401k match, medical/dental/vision, flexible time-off).
- Interviews may take place at the current Menlo Park, CA location before the September move to the new Sunnyvale campus.
