Staff Software Engineer - Identity and Access, Identity Squads | Ireland | Remote at Grafana Labs.
About the role
The Identity and Access team is responsible for the authentication and authorization architecture that protects millions of users. This role focuses on the Identity squad, where you will lead the redesign of authentication at the edge and define the technical strategy for our critical security infrastructure.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Allocate approximately 55% of your time to Go backend development, 25% to technical leadership, and 20% to operational reliability.
- Architect the authentication systems for the edge redesign project.
- Lead multi-quarter, cross-functional technical initiatives from initial design through to production.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to senior engineers to support their professional development.
- Establish technical standards for identity protocols including OAuth 2.1, OIDC, SAML, LDAP, and SCIM.
- Act as a subject matter expert for identity and authentication, representing the company at industry events.
Requirements
- Extensive experience building and maintaining distributed systems using Go.
- Proven track record of delivering large-scale, high-throughput, low-latency services in multi-tenant environments.
- Deep expertise in modern identity standards and security threat models, specifically OAuth 2.x/2.1, OIDC, and SAML.
- Ability to independently define technical architecture and drive decisions across multiple teams.
- Experience managing system reliability through SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets.
- Strong English communication skills to explain complex technical concepts to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Experience with Kubernetes or TypeScript/React.
- Knowledge of OpenFGA or KiFederate IDP.
- Background in security-critical environments.
- Contributions to open source projects.
- Familiarity with observability tools like Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.
