Staff Software Engineer - Identity and Access, Identity Squads | Spain | Remote at Grafana Labs.
About the role
This role focuses on redesigning the authentication infrastructure that supports millions of daily users across our observability platform. You will lead the technical direction for authentication protocols, ensuring our systems remain secure and performant at scale.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Spend approximately 55 percent of your time on Go backend development, 25 percent on technical leadership and collaboration, and 20 percent on operations and reliability.
- Architect and own the technical direction for authentication systems, specifically the edge authentication redesign.
- Lead large-scale, multi-quarter initiatives that span multiple internal services and teams.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to senior engineers to support their professional growth.
- Act as the primary technical authority for identity protocols including OAuth 2.1, OIDC, SAML, LDAP, and SCIM.
- Drive standardization of authentication patterns across the engineering organization.
- Represent the company at conferences and contribute to the broader identity community.
Requirements
- Proven expertise in distributed systems engineering using Go.
- Experience building and operating high-throughput, low-latency services in multi-tenant environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives independently.
- Strong understanding of SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets in the context of system reliability and security.
- Expert knowledge of modern identity standards and threat models, specifically OAuth 2.x/2.1, OIDC, and SAML.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Nice to have
- Experience with Kubernetes.
- Proficiency in TypeScript and React.
- Familiarity with OpenFGA and KiFederate IDP.
- Background in security-critical environments.
- Experience maintaining or contributing to open source projects.
- Familiarity with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.
