Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Join the Databases team to build and maintain distributed telemetry systems like Loki, Mimir, Tempo, and Pyroscope. You will contribute to our open-source observability platform, managing its transition from code to cloud-scale operations.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and operate distributed systems with a focus on performance and reliability.
• Drive projects from initial concept through to production deployment and maintenance.
• Participate in on-call rotations to ensure the health of our services.
• Contribute to open-source projects and collaborate with team members on technical design.
• Influence the product roadmap and your own professional development goals.
• Use AI coding assistants to iterate on documentation, testing, and refactoring.

Requirements

• Proficiency in at least one programming language (Go is preferred, but experience with Python, C, C++, or Rust is acceptable).
• Experience delivering software projects from requirements gathering to final shipping.
• Background in cloud software development or systems engineering.
• Ability to write clean, maintainable, and high-performance code.
• Strong communication skills suited for a remote-first, global environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with Kubernetes or Docker.
• Operational experience using Grafana or Prometheus.
• Knowledge of microservices architectures and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with SRE tasks, on-call responsibilities, or infrastructure as code.

Practical notes

Compensation includes equity and bonus eligibility. The company provides a global annual leave policy of 30 days, including 3 days for company-wide shutdown.
