Job description
Software Engineer, Payments at govwell.
About the role
Govwell is seeking a Payments Engineer to develop the core financial infrastructure for government services. This role involves building a robust, auditable payments system from the ground up, crucial for handling diverse fee types and collection methods for municipalities. You will define the architecture and own the financial backbone of the platform.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design the foundational financial architecture for Govwell, serving as the official record for all municipal financial transactions.
- Construct a fully auditable and mathematically consistent ledger that finance teams can rely on.
- Develop a precise system for calculating fees, moving beyond manual tracking.
- Integrate partial payments, deposits, and refunds as core functionalities, not afterthoughts.
- Manage the transition of current payment processes to the new, advanced system with real customer data.
- Collaborate directly with finance teams, municipal staff, and other engineers who will depend on this system.
- Establish the technical standards for future engineering work within this domain.
Requirements
- Experience designing financial or transactional systems where accuracy is paramount, such as payments, billing, or ledger systems.
- Strong opinions on how a payment system should be architected and a desire to implement your vision.
- Comfort with ambiguity in domain design, focusing on defining the right abstractions rather than just implementing features.
- Ability to think in terms of invariants and edge cases, considering complex scenarios like duplicate webhooks or mid-invoice fee changes.
- Excitement to work with the latest AI models in product development and personal workflow.
- Demonstrated ownership of a significant product area from end-to-end, with specific examples of shipped and maintained work.
- Strong product instincts, asking thorough questions to understand customer problems beyond initial descriptions.
Nice to have
- Experience with idempotency, webhooks, and payment processor integrations (Stripe, Finix, or similar).
