Senior Full Stack Software Engineer
Job description
Senior Full Stack Software Engineer at General Motors.
About the role
In this senior engineering position, you will contribute to the design, development, and quality assurance of applications within GM's Product Validation, Safety & Quality IT (PVSQ) division. This role encompasses various areas including regulatory compliance, safety systems, and quality engineering for vehicle programs. Depending on your expertise, you may focus on creating comprehensive features across the technology stack or on enhancing test automation and quality assurance processes.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and manage back-end microservices using Java frameworks such as Quarkus or Spring Boot, implementing both REST and GraphQL APIs with clear versioning and contracts.
- Develop responsive front-end components utilizing Next.js and React, employing TypeScript and Apollo for accessing GraphQL data.
- Create and maintain Databricks data workflows, including Unity Catalog and Delta tables, to support regulatory reporting and dashboards.
- Safely evolve the relational database schema (PostgreSQL or Oracle) by writing versioned Liquibase changesets that integrate with the application code pipeline.
- Write clean, well-documented, and testable code that adheres to the team's established design patterns and standards.
- Conduct thorough code reviews and create unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using tools like TestNG and Selenium, ensuring quality at every release.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across services, the portal, and data pipelines, utilizing observability tools such as Datadog or Azure Application Insights.
- Participate in the CI/CD pipeline (using GitHub Actions) and ensure the main branch is always in a releasable state.
- Translate business and regulatory requirements into actionable development tasks, collaborating closely with stakeholders and business analysts.
- Lead software design efforts to ensure scalability and reusability throughout the full stack, from the user interface to the database.
What you'll need
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in developing and deploying production software, with significant recent expertise in Java and JVM technologies (Quarkus or Spring Boot).
- Proven full-stack development skills, capable of managing features from a Next.js/React front end through to backend services and database integration.
- Experience in taking business requirements from concept to deployment, focusing on scalable and reusable design rather than merely completing predefined tasks.
- Hands-on experience with RESTful and GraphQL API design, including best practices for contract management and API security.
- Proficient with relational databases (PostgreSQL or Oracle) in transactional services, utilizing ORM tools like Hibernate or JPA, and managing schema migrations using Liquibase.
- Familiarity with data lakehouse platforms for analytics and reporting, preferably with Databricks, and an understanding of data models and access control.
- Experience in deploying and managing services on Azure, including Docker containers and Kubernetes (AKS).
- Knowledge of Git and GitHub-based CI/CD processes, including automated builds, testing, and security scanning.
- Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for provisioning and configuration.
- Ability to establish and maintain technical and operational metadata standards, data movement patterns, and ETL/ELT best practices.
- Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and experience in Agile/Scrum methodologies.
People Skills
- Strong leadership abilities in guiding development projects and making design decisions, with a focus on collaborative execution of deliverables.
- Self-motivated and quick to adapt, with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Highly organized, capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to convert regulatory and stakeholder requirements into actionable development tasks and engage effectively with diverse audiences.
What will give you a competitive edge
- Experience with Apache Spark and large-scale data processing on Databricks.
- Familiarity with change data capture patterns and tools that support a medallion lakehouse.
- Knowledge of security scanning tools and secure software development lifecycle practices.
- Experience with feature-flagged and trunk-based development methodologies.
- Understanding of AI-assisted development tools and workflows.
- Background in regulated industries where compliance and reporting are critical.
- Experience with observability platforms like Datadog or Azure Application Insights.
