Machine Learning Scientist/Senior Machine Learning Scientist at Genentech.
About the role
Genentech is seeking a researcher to join the AI for Drug Discovery team within the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence. You will focus on creating autonomous, LLM-based agentic workflows to improve small-molecule drug design by integrating machine learning, physics-based simulations, and cheminformatics.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Create and implement agentic workflows and machine learning models to solve small-molecule drug design problems.
- Fine-tune foundation models using internal and external datasets.
- Refine hypotheses generated by agents in partnership with medicinal chemists and structural biologists.
- Contribute to the scientific community through conference presentations, open-source projects, and journal publications.
- Partner with internal research teams and external academic collaborators.
Requirements
- PhD or equivalent research depth in machine learning, computer science, chemical engineering, physics, or statistics.
- Up to 2 years of industry research experience for the Scientist level; 2+ years for the Senior Scientist level.
- Proficiency in Python and agentic coding environments like LangChain.
- Expertise in ML frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
- Experience with cheminformatics toolkits like RDKit or OpenEye.
- Strong background in linear algebra, probability, optimization, GNNs, sequence models, and reinforcement learning.
- Documented history of scientific achievement via publications or a public project portfolio.
Nice to have
- Experience managing multi-agent or multi-tool scientific pipelines.
- Background in the small-molecule drug discovery value chain.
- Knowledge of structural biology datasets.

Practical notes
- Salary range in New York, NY: $141,100 - $262,100 (Scientist) or $160,100 - $297,300 (Senior Scientist).
- Compensation includes a discretionary annual bonus and standard company benefits.
