About the role
You will own the digital heartbeat of the dbt community by leading engagement efforts centered on the dbt Slack community. You will cultivate a high-signal, welcoming space where data practitioners across the globe can connect, learn, and collaborate effectively. This role requires deep partnership with internal stakeholders and community leaders to evolve strategy and strengthen the member experience. You will surface actionable community insights to inform product, marketing, and support initiatives while closing the loop with members. You will also plan and manage incident response related to community safety and conduct. Ultimately, you will shape how data practitioners engage with dbt and each other every day across the world.

What you'll do
- Own day-to-day operations of the dbt Slack community, ensuring a welcoming, high-signal experience for members worldwide.
- Partner with community leaders and internal stakeholders to evolve channel strategy, community guidelines, and engagement programming.
- Develop and maintain scalable moderation and support workflows (triage, escalation paths, response playbooks) including Code of Conduct enforcement.
- Coach and support moderators and community champions; recruit and onboard new moderators as the community grows.
- Create content systems that keep members informed and activated (announcements, highlights, prompts, and community storytelling).
- Surface community insights and member feedback to Product, Marketing, and Support; close the loop with the community on outcomes.
- Monitor and report on key engagement and health metrics (growth, activation, retention, response times, sentiment) and run experiments to improve them.
- Manage the community tool stack for digital engagement (Slack workflows, analytics, knowledge base, integrations, web portal) and document best practices.
- Plan for and manage incident response in collaboration with Legal/People/Security as needed (harassment, safety, sensitive topics).
- Support cross-channel digital engagement efforts beyond Slack (community forums, social, events) to create a cohesive member journey.
- Evaluate and prioritize community-sourced feature requests and feedback to guide roadmap alignment.
- Design and facilitate virtual and in-person community events that foster peer learning and networking among data practitioners.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to advocate for community needs and influence product improvements.
- Maintain and evolve community governance models to ensure clarity, fairness, and long-term sustainability.
- Drive adoption of dbt best practices through community-led content, discussions, and learning resources.
- Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify trends, pain points, and opportunities within the community.
- Work closely with customer success and support to escalate critical member issues and resolve them efficiently.
- Ensure all community activities align with company values, policies, and brand standards.
- Document processes, learnings, and playbooks to enable scalability and transfer of knowledge.
- Contribute to the broader dbt ecosystem by sharing insights and best practices with partner organizations.
- Continuously iterate on community strategies based on feedback, metrics, and evolving member needs.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in digital community management, online engagement, or community program management in a global or distributed environment.
- Demonstrated experience owning day-to-day operations for a large online community (e.g., Slack/Discord/forum), including moderation, member support, and community health.
- Strong understanding of online community dynamics and how to cultivate trust, belonging, and shared purpose at scale.
- Experience building and improving moderation and support workflows (triage, escalation paths, response playbooks), including Code of Conduct enforcement.
- Proven ability to manage and grow engaged, diverse communities in a mission-driven, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, accessible content.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and meet deadlines.
- Comfort working with data, analytics, and qualitative feedback to inform decision-making and measure impact.
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotations for community incidents as needed.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote environment across time zones.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and safe community environment for all members.
- Familiarity with data and analytics concepts is strongly preferred.
- Experience with community tools such as Slack, forums, knowledge bases, and engagement platforms is required.
- Understanding of data transformation and analytics tooling (e.g., dbt, SQL) is a significant advantage.
