About the role
You will define the test strategy that proves our large deployable antenna can unfold reliably in orbit. You will design and execute a comprehensive ground-based deployment test program that de-risks the full aperture deployment sequence. This role owns the creation of test fixtures, load cells, and custom tooling that safely replicates orbital boundary conditions. You will capture high-fidelity kinematic and force data to correlate ground tests with on-orbit performance. You will work closely with mechanical analysts to iterate designs based on test evidence and failure mitigation. You will establish repeatable test procedures that ensure every flight unit meets geometric and timing requirements. You will serve as the technical authority linking test results to system-level simulations and mission success criteria. You will communicate complex test outcomes to cross-functional stakeholders in a clear, data-driven manner.

What you'll do
Establish a rigorous deployment test campaign that validates the aperture unfolding sequence under gravity-offload conditions.
Design and fabricate specialized test fixtures and harnessing solutions that remove gravitational loads while preserving boundary conditions.
Instrument the deployed structure with precision sensors to quantify kinematics, timing, and force profiles across the full range of motion.
Execute repeatable test sequences that generate statistically significant data sets supporting design verification and acceptance.
Perform detailed correlation between ground test results and orbital flight predictions to refine analytical models.
Identify and document deviations from predicted deployment behavior, then support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Develop test procedures and checklists that ensure consistency, safety, and compliance across multiple test iterations.
Support integration and test readiness reviews by providing clear evidence that deployment mechanisms meet mission requirements.
Collaborate with mechanical, systems, and mission assurance teams to align test objectives with program milestones.
Translate high-level aperture geometry requirements into measurable test criteria that verify performance in orbit.
Lead test execution at facility locations, coordinating equipment, personnel, and data systems for efficient campaign progress.
Champion a test-driven mindset that closes the gap between simulation, hardware, and on-orbit reality.
Document all test activities, results, and decisions in a traceable format that supports audits, reviews, and future reuse.
Act as the deployment test subject matter expert, mentoring junior engineers and technicians where appropriate.
Requirements
Must have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution.
Must possess demonstrated experience deploying or testing large mechanical structures, preferably in a space, defense, or aerospace context.
Must have hands-on experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems used to capture force, displacement, and timing measurements.
Must be comfortable working in a test environment that may involve mechanical, electrical, and acoustic hazards.
Must be able to lift and handle moderate test hardware, tools, and equipment safely and consistently.
Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship at this time.
Must be willing to work from our offices in California or Texas on a regular basis.
Must be able to pass a background check when required for site access or program data sensitivity.
Must be able to meet project timelines and milestones, including potential evening or weekend test windows when required.
Must be able to read, write, and communicate technical information clearly in English.
Must comply with all safety policies, procedures, and standards applicable to test operations and facility access.
Must maintain attention to detail when managing test procedures, configuration control, and data integrity.
Must demonstrate a proactive approach to identifying risks and escalating issues to keep the program on schedule.
Must be comfortable using standard office tools, engineering software, and test automation platforms in a collaborative setting.
Nice to have
Experience with optical or RF aperture alignment and measurement techniques.
Knowledge of space-qualified materials, coatings, and compliance verification methods.
Understanding of mission assurance and regulatory considerations relevant to space-based assets.
Experience with test automation frameworks or script-based data analysis.
Practical notes
This role requires on-site presence at our facilities in California or Texas.
Some travel between test sites is expected to support campaign activities and cross-team coordination.
