We are seeking a Staff Engineer to join our team at Dutchie. This role involves tackling complex technical challenges across multiple teams, proactively identifying issues, and guiding our engineering strategy to prevent future problems. What you'll do
Drive significant improvements in enterprise-grade retail software operating at scale.
Define technical direction and architectural decisions, aligning teams with system evolution.
Collaborate with stakeholders to refine and validate customer-facing features.
Engage with customers to understand their workflows and pain points, translating insights into product enhancements.
Develop unified solutions for cross-team technical problems.
Mentor fellow engineers, fostering their growth and reinforcing your own understanding.
Assist teams in planning, estimating, and mitigating risks for large projects through effective breakdown and sequencing.
Establish high standards for engineering judgment, code quality, and technical craft.
Requirements
Demonstrated experience in building and operating production systems at scale.
In-depth, hands-on proficiency in at least one modern backend technology. Dutchie utilizes .NET/C#, TypeScript, Ruby, and React for frontend, with PostgreSQL, MS SQL, and MongoDB for data storage. Adaptability to new stacks is valued.
Experience designing scalable data models for both relational and non-relational databases.
A commitment to writing clean, well-tested, and maintainable code.
Regular use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for tasks such as system research, issue diagnosis, solution planning, code generation, and review.
Comfort and enthusiasm for an agentic-first environment, utilizing AI to enhance solution delivery speed and safety.
A track record of elevating team capabilities by establishing repeatable practices from individual successes.
Ability to positively influence and improve the output and judgment of those around you.
Genuine curiosity about customer needs, using their challenges to guide team efforts.
Proactive ownership of cross-team initiatives, scoping, breaking down, and coordinating efforts.

Nice to have
Experience within the cannabis industry, either building for it, operating within it, or possessing deep domain knowledge.
Experience developing Point of Sale (POS), e-commerce, payments, or other retail/commerce technologies.
Experience building and monitoring cloud-native infrastructure, particularly on AWS.
Extensive experience with third-party integrations.
Experience introducing AI-assisted workflows, tools, or agents to an engineering team.

Practical notes
Targeted starting salary range: $170,000 - $230,000.
