Director of Communications
Job description
About the role
Duolingo seeks a Director of Communications to own the narrative architecture of our most critical moments. You will shape how the world perceives product launches, business results, and strategic growth. This role demands an operator who translates complex product initiatives into credible stories that build trust and drive adoption. You will connect what we build to tangible outcomes for learners and the business, ensuring every message stands up to scrutiny.
The position is based in New York, New York, and is an office-based role. The target compensation band is $180,000-$240,000 annually.
What you will do
You will architect the storylines for Duolingo's major product bets, ensuring consistency across every communication channel. This involves turning intricate product developments into clear, evidence-driven narratives that learners and stakeholders can easily grasp. You will establish repeatable frameworks that link product releases to learner impact and business performance, particularly around AI, efficacy, and monetization.
A core responsibility is preparing executives with sharp, credible talking points for earnings, press briefings, and other high-visibility forums. You will partner with Data and Finance to surface standout metrics and integrate them into ongoing narratives, transforming numbers into proof of progress. The role also involves managing agency relationships to uphold a consistently high production standard across all materials. You will define what success looks like for communications, tracking pull-through, clarity, and sentiment to measure real impact.
You will translate ambiguous product signals into coherent narratives that clarify the "why" behind strategic choices for internal and external audiences. You will identify inflection points in product rollouts and own the narrative before others define the conversation for you. This position requires you to synthesize feedback from classrooms, boardrooms, and customer touchpoints into a single, compelling storyline. You will ensure that every piece of content, from briefings to blog posts, reflects rigorous thinking and precise language. Ultimately, you will act as the chief storyteller who ensures that the company's ambitions are understood and trusted by the world.
What you need
Success in this role requires recent, hands-on experience in product communications and corporate or financial narratives within a high-growth environment. You must have a proven ability to translate product work into differentiated stories that earn attention and understanding. Direct experience supporting earnings cycles or partnering with Finance and Investor Relations is essential.
You should be able to quickly identify the signal within roadmaps, datasets, and results, then build credible narratives around them. Your writing and editing must be of the highest level, capable of making complex ideas simple without sacrificing accuracy. Experience preparing executives for pivotal moments such as earnings, launches, and major interviews is non-negotiable. You must thrive while operating cross-functionally, navigating fast-moving settings with ease. A history of managing agencies while upholding a demanding quality bar is required.
You must possess the ability to work in an office-based environment in New York, New York, on a full-time basis. You must meet the target compensation band expectations as determined by the company at the time of hiring. You must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for this role at this time. You must have a demonstrated track record of owning end-to-end communication strategies in product-centric organizations. You must be comfortable aligning messaging with both business outcomes and learner impact under tight timelines.
What is valued
While not mandatory, experience within product-led, experimentation-heavy companies that run frequent tests is advantageous. A strong instinct for product storytelling that resonates deeply with learners, partners, and investors will set exceptional candidates apart. The ideal professional views communication as a system of measurable outcomes, constantly refining the architecture of our story to ensure it stands up to public examination.
