Engineering Manager

About the role

This role involves leading a team within Dialpad's Agentic AI initiatives. You will guide the technical direction and execution of the company's next-generation AI platform, focusing on building production systems where AI agents can reason, act, and execute workflows safely. This position requires a blend of hands-on technical involvement and people management, working closely with various leadership teams to deliver advanced AI solutions.

What you'll do

• Direct the technical strategy and implementation for a significant part of Dialpad's agentic AI platform, including memory architectures, retrieval systems, and evaluation or observability features.
• Remain engaged with code and design, providing hands-on contributions to resolve blockers, accelerate key tasks, and uphold high technical standards.
• Design and deploy scalable AI systems that support autonomous assistance, real-time voice reasoning, and secure API or tool execution across enterprise workflows.
• Manage and develop a small team of engineers through coaching, feedback, career guidance, and performance reviews.
• Establish clear priorities, ownership, and execution plans, helping the team navigate ambiguous situations and contribute to hiring and onboarding efforts.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Applied Research leadership to align technical execution with Dialpad's long-term business goals.
• Evaluate and apply new agent frameworks, inference optimization techniques, retrieval methods, and safety measures to gain product or platform advantages.
• Implement strong engineering practices in design review, operational readiness, testing, quality, and AI safety.
• Mentor engineers and tech leads, reinforcing sound technical judgment and helping define standards for an AI-native software development lifecycle.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant software engineering experience.
• Demonstrated history of technical and engineering leadership (as a Tech Lead or first-line manager) in delivering complex, large-scale systems.
• Strong background in scaling distributed systems and production infrastructure before transitioning into applied AI, LLM platforms, and agentic architectures.
• Ability to lead and develop a small team of engineers.
• Expertise in shipping production systems where AI agents reason, act, coordinate, and safely execute workflows.
• Deep knowledge of LLM platforms, including inference optimization and fine-tuning strategies.
• Expertise in advanced retrieval systems and memory architectures.
• Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as LangChain/LangGraph, CrewAI, or AWS/Google Agent ecosystems.
• Experience with AI Ops, including evaluation, observability, and safety frameworks for production AI systems.
• Knowledge of real-time infrastructure and voice/conversational AI.
• Experience with tool use, API execution frameworks, and human-in-the-loop validation systems.
• Capability to set technical direction, identify architectural risks, and guide execution while maintaining attention to detail.
• Ability to coach engineers, provide clear feedback, manage performance, and support career growth.
• Understanding of how to create clarity, define measurable goals, and systematically address quality, reliability, and technical debt.
• Aptitude for thriving in ambiguous environments, building new AI products from scratch, and scaling them into stable enterprise systems.
