Senior Software Engineer II, Toolpath Algorithms
Job description
Senior Software Engineer II, Toolpath Algorithms at dandy
About the role
This position is central to advancing dandy's manufacturing capabilities by automating complex, high-dexterity tasks. You will be instrumental in developing novel robotic control and toolpath generation systems, directly impacting yield and production efficiency. This role is key to bridging digital design with physical output for our multi-modal manufacturing processes.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect the foundational algorithms for dandy's next-generation automated dental lab systems.
- Construct workflows that integrate additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing followed by precise milling or polishing.
- Engineer advanced robotic control systems, including 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) mechanisms, to automate intricate finishing processes on dental prosthetics.
- Develop and implement toolpath simulation and collision detection to ensure first-time success in manufacturing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to move robotic concepts from research to production-ready solutions.
- Address significant manufacturing challenges that currently limit global scaling.
Requirements
- Possess a strong software engineering background with the ability to write production-quality C++ or Python code.
- Demonstrate substantial practical experience with 5-axis CNC machinery or 6DoF robotic integration, including real-world application of your code to control machines.
- Exhibit proficiency in computational geometry, mesh processing, and relevant algorithms, utilizing libraries like CGAL or Open CASCADE, or working with WASM/WebGPU.
- Have proven experience in toolpath simulation, kinematics, and robotic path planning.
- Bring a "0 to 1" development mindset, comfortable defining new paths in a startup environment.
- Communicate technical complexities and trade-offs effectively to diverse stakeholders.
- Be available for frequent travel, up to 30%, to our sites in Salt Lake City, Dallas, and Indianapolis.
Nice to have
- Prior experience building and scaling systems in a fast-paced startup setting.
- Familiarity with both additive (e.g., SLA, DLP) and subtractive (e.g., Milling, Grinding) manufacturing processes.
- Experience in the dental or medical technology sector, particularly with digital prosthetic design or medical device production.
- Understanding of compliance and regulatory frameworks relevant to regulated device manufacturing.
- Deep knowledge of GPU optimization techniques using HLSL, GLSL, or CUDA for geometry processing.
Skills & tools
- Languages: C++, TypeScript
- Graphics/Compute: Three.js, WebGL, WebGPU, WGSL
- Platform: WASM / Emscripten, React
- Robotics: ROS, custom 6DoF control stacks, or proprietary toolpath engines.
