Key facts
What you'll do
- Participate in extensive training programs that cover a wide range of topics, including spacecraft systems, robotics, and extravehicular activities (EVA).
- Conduct scientific research and experiments in microgravity environments, contributing to advancements in fields such as biology, physics, and materials science.
- Collaborate with engineers and scientists to develop and test new technologies that enhance space exploration capabilities.
- Operate and monitor spacecraft systems during launch, orbit, and re-entry phases, ensuring mission success and crew safety.
- Engage in public outreach activities, including educational events and media appearances, to inspire the next generation of explorers and scientists.
- Work closely with international space agencies and partners to coordinate joint missions and share knowledge and resources.
- Maintain physical fitness and mental preparedness through regular training and simulations, ensuring readiness for the physical demands of space travel.
- Document mission activities and results, contributing to scientific publications and reports that advance our understanding of space and its effects on human physiology.
Requirements
- A master's degree or higher in a relevant field such as engineering, physical science, biological science, mathematics, or computer science.
- A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving and teamwork.
- Exceptional physical fitness, with the ability to pass NASA's long-duration spaceflight physical examination.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
- Experience in leadership roles, demonstrating the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
- Familiarity with spacecraft systems and operations, with prior experience in piloting aircraft being a significant advantage.
Nice to have
- Previous experience as a pilot, particularly with military or commercial aircraft, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of robotics and automation technologies, particularly as they relate to space exploration.
- Experience in conducting scientific research, particularly in a laboratory or field setting.
- Multilingual abilities, particularly in languages relevant to international space partnerships, can be beneficial.
