Job description
Staff Software Engineer, Accounts & Ledgering at commure.
About the role
Commure is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the financial core of our Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) platform. This role focuses on ensuring accurate financial records, from initial payments to final ledger balances, providing reliable data for patients and leadership. You will design and build the next generation of our event-driven financial system.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect the next-generation account and ledger model, ensuring immutable events and derived balances, with clear definitions for payer, patient, adjustments, and cash.
- Maintain consistency between operational balances and financial reports, implementing drift detection and self-healing mechanisms when discrepancies arise.
- Reconcile billed charges, payer remittances, bank deposits, and financial reports, identifying and addressing differences proactively.
- Scale idempotent posting and adjustment pipelines for high transaction volumes using negation/reversal logic.
- Operate critical financial systems on large Postgres tables, focusing on safe migrations, trigger-driven projections, backfills, observability, and incident response.
- Establish and uphold high standards for observability and operational readiness, including monitoring, logging, tracing, dashboards, alerting, and safe production rollouts.
- Collaborate with platform and product teams to protect sensitive customer data, strengthen security, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Drive complex, cross-system initiatives from architecture and design through implementation, migration, rollout, and ongoing production operations.
- Make balanced decisions considering security, correctness, reliability, performance, and simplicity against delivery speed.
- Mentor engineers, lead architecture reviews, and elevate technical standards through clear guidance and constructive feedback.
- Take ownership in a fast-paced environment, identifying and resolving systemic risks at their root.
Requirements
- Eight or more years of experience in software development, including Staff-level contributions, architectural leadership, and cross-team influence.
- Strong backend engineering skills, with a preference for Python, and extensive experience with relational databases at scale, including query performance, ACID transactions, safe migrations, and data integrity.
- Proven experience designing or operating financial systems, payments, billing, reconciliation, accounting, or ledgers, with an understanding of double-entry accounting, append-only ledgers, idempotency, reversals, and derived balances.
- Experience deploying production systems with established observability, alerting, and incident response practices, especially for high-stakes workflows.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of working effectively with operations and customers on critical correctness issues.
Nice to have
- Experience with healthcare RCM, patient accounting, insurance remittance (835/ERA), AR aging, or practice-management billing.
- Familiarity with file-based integrations, bank reconciliation, event-sourced/CDC architectures, or high-throughput batch pipelines.
- Experience evolving monolithic systems towards clearer domain boundaries or an event-oriented model.
Skills & tools
- Python
- PostgreSQL
- Observability tools (monitoring, logging, distributed tracing, dashboards, alerting)
