What you'll do
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services that are integral to risk detection, fraud prevention, and overall financial risk management within the Coinbase ecosystem, ensuring they can handle the dynamic nature of cryptocurrency markets.
- Take full ownership of the development lifecycle for new features, from the initial brainstorming and design phases to implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing monitoring, with a strong emphasis on enhancing risk management capabilities for both users and the organization.
- Collaborate closely with teams in Data Science, Machine Learning, and Risk Analysis to build proactive systems, including user-facing risk features and models, as well as reactive tools for incident response and one-off risk mitigation strategies to effectively reduce fraud and financial losses.
- Improve the reliability and observability of risk platform services by creating systems that identify regressions, ensure prompt visibility of issues, and actively engage in incident response and post-incident reviews to enhance service stability.
- Foster a positive engineering culture within the team by maintaining a fast-paced development rhythm, participating in code reviews, and creating reusable components that can benefit the wider team.
- Engage in continuous learning and application of best practices in software engineering to enhance the overall quality and performance of backend services.
- Work on integrating generative AI solutions responsibly, ensuring that human oversight is maintained to deliver business-ready results that enhance workflow efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality.
- Participate in cross-functional team meetings to align on project goals, share insights, and contribute to the overall strategy of the risk engineering team.
Requirements
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in backend software engineering, demonstrating a track record of delivering production-level services capable of managing high-volume workloads across various concurrent projects.
- Proficiency in at least one backend programming language, such as Go, Ruby, Python, or Java, along with experience in relational or NoSQL databases, cloud platforms like AWS or GCP, containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes, and event streaming technologies like Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Strong understanding of software design principles, data structures, and algorithms, with the ability to independently manage complex tasks and navigate unfamiliar systems with appropriate support.
- Previous experience in developing or working with distributed systems optimized for high throughput and low latency, including APIs, event-driven architectures, and cloud infrastructure.
- Familiarity with risk management, fraud detection, and payment processing systems (ACH, cards, crypto), as well as blockchain technologies (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) and the specific risk challenges associated with cryptocurrency transactions.
- Ability to apply generative AI in a responsible manner, ensuring that human oversight is integrated into the process to achieve measurable improvements in efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and quality.
Nice to have
- Experience in risk management, fraud detection, and payment systems (ACH, cards, crypto), as well as knowledge of blockchain technologies (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) and the unique risk challenges that come with cryptocurrency transactions.
- Familiarity with security best practices and compliance standards relevant to financial technology.
- Previous involvement in projects that required collaboration with cross-functional teams, particularly in fast-paced environments.

Practical notes
- The annual base salary for this position ranges from $154,000 to $154,000 CAD. Total compensation may also include equity, eligibility for bonuses, and benefits such as medical, dental, and vision coverage.
